We didn’t know it, but we’ve been waiting our whole lives to make this album.
When we wrote The Great Divide, we knew this project was going to be our invitation to the world to do better, to be kind, to spread love.
When performing a few of the songs live like the Great Divide, Gleam and Beam and seeing people’s reactions after the show, we connected, heart to heart, and they shared how much they connected to the songs.
In our lifetime we’ve never been in the middle of such a dangerous divide, in just about every facet of life. We know how powerful music is and we felt compelled to write songs that would bring people together, spread peace and love, unite hearts and combat hate, one listener at a time.
This then, is a Stone Poets peace movement, with songs like The Great Divide, Dear Hate, Beauty of it All, Hey Hey, Tell me it’s Alright, Gleam and Beam just to name a few. The entire album touches on the themes mentioned above.
After the songs were written and while we were recording, we had to think of a title. One of the songs is called Human, so we decided to call the whole album HUMAN. We had a logo designed that was filled with genome sequencing and, as the song lyric is, “no one's perfect, we're human after all”, we decided to turn the A upside down. In math, an upside down A is the universal quantifier meaning for all, for each, for every. For us, it really highlights our desire, the need, for inclusivity.
Next was the perfect cover art to convey our messaging and enlisted Vancouver artist Pamela Windeyer to paint the concept. We imagined two people holding each other, showing love, peace and harmony. She is so tuned into our music that she came up with a beautiful piece of art for us that expressed exactly what we envisioned.
To tie all the pieces together, DNA strands were placed throughout the packaging as no two people have exactly the same DNA sequence, but the DNA base pair sequence of all people is nearly identical—that’s what makes us all humans. Our friend, Keith Clark shot our photo for the back cover.
We are so grateful to our co-producer, Sheldon Zaharko and musician friends, Jerry Wong, Nick Haggar, Liam MacDonald, Jeremy Holmes, Jordan Aranas, Geeta Das and Joe Alvaro who helped bring the songs to life.
It’s time to get the message out to the world. Peace movements are hard to start, but we believe once they start rolling, there’s no stopping them!
Now that the album is out, the reviews we’ve been receiving are exactly what we hoped for when we started putting this project together. We’d like to share some with you.
